FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is required for a legal marriage in Australia?

There is quite a bit involved actually, but leave that all to me. I am a registered Authorised Civil Marriage Celebrant within Australia and am able solemnise marriages according to law. If you are intending to legally get hitched in Australia, there are some requirements that must be completed and I will help you throughout this process.

It starts with the basics:
* You must both be over the age of 18 (or have a court order permitting you to marry if you are between 16-18 years old).
* You cannot be related to each other.

If you meet this criteria then we get into the good stuff!

Starting with a Notice of Intended Marriage. This must be completed and provided to me at least one month prior to your ceremony (and no more than 18 months before the ceremony). I usually do this face-to-face, but if you are not located in Perth there are options to do this remotely and I will explain how you can do this on an individual basis.

You’ll need two forms of identification each; A passport is the easiest form of identification and covers all of the information required. Alternatively, we can use a form showing your birth date and place of birth (usually a birth certificate) + a secondary form (usually a proof of age card or driver’s license).

Dependant on your personal circumstances, I may also request additional supporting documentation. If either party has been married previously I will be required to sight the divorce paper or death certificate.

Before the ceremony you will also need to sign the Declaration of No Legal Impediment to Marriage to declare that there is no legal reason why you should not be married.

During your ceremony I will read the The Monitum and you will read the Legal Vows. You will sign your Official Certificate of Marriage and Form 15 (Commemorative Certificate) in the presence of two witnesses over the age of 18.

After the Ceremony I will lodge all legal paperwork to the Registering Authority (state in which the marriage occurred).

Can I get married anywhere?

Simple answer is YES! As a Civil Marriage Celebrant, I am permitted to marry you both anywhere and at any time of the day or night. If you have a favourite spot in the park or along the beach, even up in the mountains, I can make it happen.

How much do you charge and what’s your fee structure?

Each ceremony is completely unique and because of this, I quote each individually. Having been married myself, I completely understand the importance of getting the right celebrant without breaking the bank. This is deeply considered in my quote to you and the service I provide.
Once you decide that I am the celebrant for you, the following fee schedule will apply:

– A booking fee due within 7 days (30% of the ceremony fee).

– The remainder of the total amount (final payment) due 14 days before the event. With money coming out of the account for lots of different parts, I am more than happy to negotiate a smaller, more frequent payment schedule if that is easier.

Exact payment figures and dates will be shown on your quote/invoice.

Do you do more than once ceremony in a day?

Nope!! Once you book me in as your celebrant, you are my sole focus for the day. There’s literally no marriage without the celebrant, with so many moving parts you can have trust that I am there for you!

What time do you turn up on the day?

If you’re not 1 hour early…. you’re late. No but seriously, one of my greatest fears in life is being late. I expect to arrive at your ceremony at least 1 hour before showtime but I’ll likely be there even before that. Here I can meet any guests that arrive super early.
I will also meet with you both separately to sign the Declaration of No Legal Impediment (if we haven’t had a rehearsal prior).

Can we meet before booking you?

Of course we can! One of the most important things for the day is making sure the celebrant reflects who you are as a couple. I normally schedule in a 30 minute completely non-obligatory chat where we can run through what your vision is for the day, a bit about each other and genuinely see if we are a match.
I leave it to the two of you to discuss and decide if I’m the right guy for you. Once you’ve decided that I am, we’ll set up a face-to-face meeting where we can start the legal paperwork Notice of Indented Marriage and get the ball rolling.
From here I am available at any point in the process to answer any questions and make you feel as comfortable as possible.

Do you have a speaker we can use for the ceremony?

I take a lot of pride in making sure we have the best equipment for your day. You will have full use of my awesome Bose S1 Bluetooth Speaker and Sennheiser Wireless Microphone.

How long does an average ceremony take?

A Full Civil Marriage Ceremony will usually around 30 minutes, this will vary depending on how much is included. A Short & Sweet Ceremony is likely to take around 15 minutes.

Do you travel outside of Perth?

I love to travel, even more for a wedding; however, my ceremony costs include 50km’s free from Perth’s CBD. Wedding ceremonies and rehearsals scheduled outside of this do incur a small extra cost. These are completely dependent on where and when and are individually tailored.

Can we see our ceremony beforehand?

I can absolutely send you a copy of your ceremony script before the day. This can be a good way to ease the nerves and get familiar with what to expect. I will however, leave out some key information such as your personalised story and personal vows. These are definitely best spent hearing for the first time with your loved ones and sharing the organic moments.

How do we book you as our celebrant?

Please feel free to have a read through some of the incredible days I’ve been a part of already on my couples page. If you like what you see and are interested in knowing more, please send me a quick enquiry here. I’ll get back to you with any information and options for a 30-minute online chat.
From here, if you’re happy to go ahead and book me in for your big day you’ll pay a deposit (30% of ceremony fee) to lock me in. Once that is done, your date is locked in with me and the fun begins.
